ABSTRACT

Santa Claus's real-life inspiration is Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian bishop known for his generosity, whose Dutch name, "Sinterklaas," evolved into Santa Claus. While Saint Nicholas was a historical figure, the modern jolly, red-suited Santa Claus is a legendary figure shaped by folklore.
