Abstract

UNREST SITUATIONS OF MUCORMYCOSIS OVER COVID-19 PANDEMIC: RISK FACTORS, PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR VIABLE ERADICATION

ABSTRACT

Since January 2020 world has been gripped by corona virus disease 2019 (covid-19), which is mainly caused by sever acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2). Covid 19 patients with other comorbid conditions like diabetes, malignancies, recent organ transplants and patients on long term steroids therapy are at a greater risk of developing opportunistic fungal infections . One such infection is mucormycosis (The black fungal infection). Mucormycosis is an angio invasive infection that occurs due to fungi mucorales. It is a rare disease with almost 50 % mortality rate even with appropriate treatment, so early diagnosis and treatment may help patient. The main agenda of this review is to provide an overview of etiology and pathogenesis followed by brief idea on clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment options available to treat mucormycosis.
