Abstract

OCCURRENCE OF DIAPER RASH DURING INFANCY AMONG CHILDREN IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL, KOCHI

Prof. Dr. Sunil Moothedath*, Thushara Thulasidharan, Tiji Titus

ABSTRACT

Background: Diaper rash is a common health problem among infants. Based on several studies done on the incidence of diaper rash during infancy, it was found that the diaper rash is common due to urine and feces on the diaper area. Exposure to urine for a long period of time, increased temperature, humidity and pH are the reasons for this. Various other reasons identified for diaper rash include age of the child, general well being, type of diaper used, application of barrier cream and type of feeding1.Hence this study aims to assess the occurrence of diaper rash during infancy among children between the age group of 1-2 years. Methodology: A Descriptive study was conducted with a sample size of 100 mothers of children between the age group of 1-2years using structured questionnaire to assess the reported occurrence of diaper rash among children. Results: The findings showed that among 100 children, 36 had experienced diaper rash in which all of them were using disposable diapers and there is no significant association between diaper rash and selected socio demographic variables (P>0.05). But found to have clinical significance in risk factors that develops diaper rash. Conclusion: The occurrence of diaper rash is commonly found among children who use disposable diapers during their infancy when compared to washable cotton diapers. It can be reduced by meticulous hygienic practices and by minimising the duration and by using washable cotton diapers in place of disposable synthetic diapers.
